OHM: is a measure of resistance to current. The higher the resistance at a given voltage, the less current flows. Higher resistance can be obtained by using thinner wires or by using materials that are poorer conductors.

Optical Sensor: a gas leak detector using infrared technology to detect methane gas.

Oxidizer Oven: Serving a purpose similar to a catalytic converter on a car, the oxidizer oven on a gas leak detection vehicle is designed to eliminate 80% of hydrocarbon pollutants in the air sample brought into the system for methane detection. The oxidizer oven heats the air sample to 300°C (572°F). At this temperature, methane will not oxidize, but other hydrocarbon pollutants will.

Peltier effect: the phenomena in which, when an electric current is passed through a junction consisting of wires of different metals, the junction is warmed or cooled depending on the direction of current flow.

Pentane: a hydrocarbon gas with the formula C5H12 that is sometimes used as a bottled fuel gas. Calibration of Gaz de France explosimeters are claimed to be to pentane gas. Actually, GdF units include a 100% safety factor based on the pentane LEL cur.

Pig: A device with optional elastomer cups inserted into a pipeline to perform any one of a number of functions: cleaning, displacement, batching, or internal inspection. It gets its name from the squealing noises the pipeline pigs made when first used.

Pig Launcher: A piping arrangement that allows pigs to be launched into a pipeline without stopping flow.

Pig Passage Indicator: A device installed on a pipeline to indicate the passage of a pig. A visual or electrical indication, or combination thereof, is given when the pig passes. Pig indicators can also be used in automated systems for valve sequencing. A non-instrusive model, which does not require a tap, is also available.

Pig Receiver: A piping arrangement that allows pigs to be removed from a pipeline without stopping flow.

POLYSTOPP® Fitting: A SHORTSTOPP® Welding Fitting that is designed for heat fusing to polyethylene pipe. It is constructed of PE material. Current models are either electrofusion or sidewall heat fusion, also known as saddle fusion.

Pollution: refers to the non methane gases brought into a VSR suction manifold. Eighty (80%) percent of these gases are eliminated by burning in the oxidizer oven.

Portables: refers to a self-contained, battery-operated or transportable gas monitor worn or carried by the person using it.

Pressure Warning Lock: A warning device installed on closure to alert the operator of internal pressure in the pressure vessel.

Progressive Pigging (Cleaning): A process used to clean lines that contain large amounts of debris. The process begins by using light-duty and sometimes undersized pigs and progresses to more aggressive, larger pigs as the line is cleaned.

PPM: is an acronym for Parts Per Million. One commonly used reference scale in methane gas leak detection is the number of parts per million of methane molecules in a given air sample.

Propane: a hydrocarbon fuel gas with the formula C3H8 that is used primarily as a bottled gas for heating and cooking. Being heavier than air, if propane is in a buried pipeline, it will require a separate pump to bring a sample into a gas detector's sensor chamber.
