Mainline Valve: Valve at the end of the pig launcher/receiver. When open, a pig can be launched into or recovered from the line.

Manufactured Gas: fuel gas usually made from sources such as coal or waste dump materials. Typically has a methane content of around 40 to 50% with a hydrogen content in a similar concentration. A special separate card is required to use an FID detector with manufactured gas.

Mechanical End Seal: A mechanical seal fitting designed for the water industry. It has an O-ring seal on both ends of the split sleeve.

Mechanical Seal Split Tee: A split tee-type fitting that is clamped to the pipeline. It can have a LOCK-O-RING® Flange, a SHORTSTOPP® Flange, or a weld neck flange. No welding is required.

Mechanical SHORTSLEEVE™ Fitting: A full-encirclement, mechanical, clamp-type SHORTSTOPP® Fitting. No welding is required. The 2" size is for steel pipe. The 4" to 12" sizes are for cast iron pipe.

Mechanical Top Seal: A mechanical seal fitting designed for the water industry. It has an O-ring seal around the tapped outlet.

Methane: hydrocarbon gas composed of carbon and hydrogen with a formula of CH4. It is lighter than air, colorless, odorless and flammable. It occurs in natural gas and as firedamp in coal mines. With the correct amount of oxygen present, methane ignites at 595°C. (1103°F).

Metrology: refers to EC norm testing concerning repeatability of results of any device. The CATEX+ metrology testing is to EN 50054, EN 50057 and EN 50058. EN 50054 covers the general principles and the methods for testing electrical instruments for the detection and measurement of flammable gases. The standards EN 50057 and EN 50058 cover the performance requirements for instruments belonging to Group II (with a measurement range up to 100% of the LEL scale and up to 100% of the volume gas scale).

M-STOPP™ Fitting: A hybrid fitting consisting of a TDW spherical 3-WAY™ Tee body with a Mueller top flange. It is designed for Mueller plugging machine operations.

Micro Ampere: one millionth of an ampere (0.00001 ampere)

Natural Gas: the principal fuel gas for heating and industrial use. Comprised primarily of methane. Methane concentrations can vary, with Western Europe and the USA/Canada systems usually containing 98 to 99% methane. Some lower methane concentrations are in various Eastern European systems such as 72% and 88% methane. The % gas volume scale on the CATEX+ can determine the % methane in a given gas sample.

Nitrogen: a colorless, odorless, almost inert, diatomic gas (N2). Used in a mixture with hydrogen for FID detectors (also called Azote).
