Larger than Life: TDW Provides 90-inch Closures

TDW employees often find themselves working around products that are extremely large. One such product was recently sold by TDW -- two 90-inch closures. A South American customer ordered both, which weighed approximately 15 tons each and were 10-feet, 8-inches tall by 10-feet, 7-inches wide and 4-feet, 2-inches deep. These dimensions made these closures the largest ever produced by TDW.

TDW's closures are quick-opening and easily operated by one person. The closure is designed primarily for horizontal installation, however, the closure can be installed on a vertical installation. In the latter case, a counterbalance can be provided to facilitate opening. For more information, review our technical bulletin to see how TDW can help you, click here.

TDW's V-Jet Pig: Efficiently Fighting Top of the Line Corrosion
In the last issue of Global Solutions, we introduced you to the V-Jet Pig, a unique offering from TDW which sprays inhibitor fluid that settles on the bottom of the pipeline directly to the upper quadrant of the line. This month, we thought we'd tell you a little more about this safe, cost-efficient tool.

Top of the line corrosion (TLC) is an inherent problem with many gas lines due to the inability to adequately deliver inhibitor fluid to the top inner diameter of the pipeline. Typical methods used by companies for combating corrosion in multi-phase gas lines is to use either continuous injection or batch treatment with a corrosion inhibitor. In some cases a combination of both methods of corrosion control are required.

TDW's V-Jet
Corrosion Inhibitor Pig

Continuous injection is accomplished by a nozzle being inserted into the pipeline at or near the source. Under pressure and at elevated temperatures, the inhibitor fluid is atomized as it is pumped into the pipeline, becoming a mist or fog that is carried throughout the line via gas flow, coating the pipe along the way. This is an efficient means of delivery, but the effectiveness of continuous injection is compromised as the pipeline cools, resulting in rapid condensation of the atomized inhibitor which causes it to fall and pool on the bottom of the pipeline as it returns to its liquid state leaving the top inner diameter of the pipe unprotected further down line.

Batching is an expensive process, requiring special equipment and typically causing production to shutdown during the procedure. Additionally, it is nearly impossible to ensure a solid column of inhibitor fluid between the two batching pigs, which again results in the top of the pipeline being unprotected.

TDW's V-Jet Pig is specifically designed to provide gas producers a new cost effective means of protecting their pipelines, specifically from TLC by optimizing either the injection or batching methods of corrosion control.

Mounted to the front of a specialized pig configuration designed with counterweights to maintain its orientation, the V-Jet Pig utilizes bypass flow as an accelerant and literally sucks the inhibitor fluid off the bottom and sprays it on the top quadrant of the pipeline. The V-Jet Pig features a reservoir where fluid is stored for areas of the pipeline where fluid drains away. This ensures your entire pipeline receives corrosion inhibitors.

  • The V-Jet Pig emphasizes safe and easy-to-use launching and receiving techniques.
  • TDW's V-Jet Pig reduces the need for frequent inhibitor batching.
  • The V-Jet Pig makes long runs efficiently and effectively.
  • With sturdy and reliable construction, the V-Jet Pig is designed to withstand tough use.
  • The spray head applies corrosion inhibitor fluid to the top quadrant of the pipeline.
  • The V-Jet Pig is designed to as its own reservoir in the event it should pass through a section of pipe void of corrosion inhibitor fluid, such as an incline or decline in elevation.
  • The TDW V-Jet Pig can be used as the front and/or rear pig in a batching process for a complete 360 degree inhibitor fluid saturation.

Be sure to stop by the TDW booth at the Pipeline Pigging, Integrity Assessment and Repair trade show in Houston, Feb. 3-6. Let one of our salesmen tell you more about this unique product and how it can help you.
