Sub-Sea Hot Tap in Canadian Waters

TDW, along with companies in Canada, Italy, England, Scotland, and the United States, recently participated in an ambitious sub-sea hot tapping project for a large oil company. This project required a 12" sub-sea hot tap in 75 feet of seawater
off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada.

The customer needed to bring natural gas on-line for refining and delivery. This was the last of five wellheads previously discovered and drilled by the customer. Nearby, another of their offshore gas fields was delivering product to shore via a previously buried 18-inch underwater gas pipeline. The parties decided to exploit the proximity of the two fields and use the existing pipeline.

TDW was chosen for their expertise in sub-sea hot taps, which in this case involved an 18-inch pipeline operating at 2,220 psi at 75 feet. At the customer's request, TDW assigned a project manager to handle contract specifics, technical issues, and coordination of personnel and equipment. TECHNIP, a diving contractor based out of Aberdeen, Scotland, provided the divers and crew ship for the project. Various other companies assisted in this project by providing valves, clamps, bolting services, and monitoring line pressures and leak detection. The international involvement compounded the degree of difficulty required to execute the job.

Safety and the protection of the environment were top priorities throughout this project. On land, tapping operations are routine; but when working on the ocean floor, the environmental risks are much harder to remediate. Consequently, a site integration test (SIT) was conducted which replicates conditions associated with the job.

Not only did the SIT verify the integrity of the components, it was a "dry run" for the TECHNIP divers who actually performed the manual portion of the operation.

onto the pipeline during SIT

The divers were all experienced pipeline technicians who were new to the tapping process, so TDW technicians trained the divers to safely perform the tap using the TDW SubSea 1000 tapping machine. Besides learning how to operate the machine, the divers painstakingly rehearsed moving the machinery and exchanging tools while working underwater, checking the visibility and labeling of critical control levers. Each diver's body position and location was reviewed to assure breathing hoses would not become snagged as the dive team moved about the T-1000. After testing, divers began the tapping project. The tapping machine performed flawlessly, and the project was completed on schedule.

International teamwork was the hallmark of this sub-sea hot tap and T.D. Williamson, Inc. is very proud to have been among the elite group
of service providers chosen for this important endeavor.
