Basically, all other natural gas lines branch off of the primary line that runs north and south along the length of the country. There have been numerous visits by TDW technicians to the job site and numerous meetings between all parties to determine how best to proceed. The primary goal of the customer was to be able to connect the new compressor station to the massive line without disrupting flow to major gas consumers. As the date approached for the new compressor station to go online, TDW Services Tulsa customized equipment to match the requirements of the project. A TDW 2460 XXL tapping machine and a TDW 760B tapping machine together with accessory items were prepared during August and September for shipping to the project site in late September of 2007. Before equipment left for Mexico, fittings were welded to the lines and a centering device was installed for cutter pilots in preparation for the arrival of both tapping machines. A total of four taps on the 48-inch line would have to be successfully completed. Two would be 42-inch taps performed by the 2460 XXL tapping machine and two would be six-inch taps performed by the 760B tapping machine. The location of the compressor station was situated outside of Xalapa, the capital city of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Known as Xalapa to residents and in older records, the name is often spelled Jalapa in more modern usage and by foreigners. The area is well known for its history and culture. Within a short distance, there are soaring mountains, volcanoes, rain forests, pre-Columbian ruins and wild rivers. The project site was located in an elevated, remote region that would greet TDW technicians for the start of their work day with chilly temperatures only to reach 100 degrees by afternoon. The intense heat is a not-so-subtle reminder that jalapeno chilis are named after an old factory called La Jalapena in this city. During the project, TDW technicians endured an intense tropical storm and had to erect and secure tents to keep equipment dry. Two technicians from TDW, Inc. and two technicians from TDW Mexico were able to weather the storm, protect the equipment and the job site, and successfully complete the project. Even with transporting the required equipment into a remote location, setting it up, dismantling everything and enduring a tropical storm, the job was completed in just 14 days from start to finish. The customer was pleased that the tapping project progressed as planned and the flow of gas in the 48-inch line was never stopped while the compressor station was being connected. The quality of the work was appreciated by the customer. The customer also expressed a level of surprise at how quickly the project was completed given the remote location of the job site and the installation crew’s ability to handle the adverse conditions created by the tropical storm.
