July 2007 _______________________________________________________________________________ In this issue:: - -Offshore Australia Tap in Final Stage - LineMaster™ 2007 Schedule - 2007 Trade Shows Online newsletter: http://www.tdwilliamson.com/EDM/July_07/July_07web.html _______________________________________________________________________________ t h i s m o n t h ' s f e a t u r e: Offshore Australia Tap in Final Stage by Bob Warterfield _______________________________________________________________________________ Off the West Coast of Australia, a collection of platforms has converged to initiate the production of gas.  Gas emerging from the Angel Field will be transported through a 30-inch line that will connect with a 40-inch trunk line at 1,900 psi and at a depth of 425 feet.  There are numerous technical and environmental concerns, all of which have been addressed by T.D.Williamson, Inc. well in advance of  performing the hot tap that will enable the vital link to take place.  Two TDW SubSea 1000 XL tapping machines now on site in Australia have been engineered to fulfill the technical demands of the undersea tap and the specific requirements of the customer.  Initial tests of the equipment took place at the Tulsa Manufacturing Plant on a series of vessels that accurately reflected the physical characteristics of the sub sea connection and the three-inch thick metal membrane that TDW cutters will encounter on the ocean floor.  During a second phase of testing, all equipment made a journey to the Naval Surface Warfare Division at Carder Rock, Maryland.  Inside pressurized, under water hyperbaric chambers, equipment repeated the previous testing process in conditions that duplicated the operational environment.  All aspects of equipment performance were examined including possible leakage of any fluids into the water.  As an added precaution, only environmentally friendly fluids are being used.  The Tapping Tool Deployment Frame is being lowered onto the Lower Protection Frame which straddles the pipe and the Future Tap Flange http://www.tdwilliamson.com/EDM/July_07/images/TTD_Inst_7.jpg After all testing was completed, a set of fully redundant systems was sent to Australia for System Integration Testing (SIT). Upon arrival in Australia, TDW equipment made its way to a towering assembly facility where the SS 1000 XL tapping machine was mated with a tapping tool deployment frame that will descend onto a lower protection frame straddling the pipeline on the ocean floor.  The entire lifting and lowering process was performed inside the assembly facility so that divers and engineers could observe the process that will take place in dark water at depths of over 400 feet.  Once on site, divers will control the descent of the frame and tapping equipment.  The lowering process is highly versatile and will allow divers to move the frame in virtually any direction to accurately align pins and bolts that secure all equipment to the lower protection frame and to the Future Tap Flange (FTF) already in place on the pipeline. Inside the assembly facility, divers work closely with TDW trainers to operate the SS 1000 XL.  Once in the water and at pipeline depth, divers operating the tapping machine will have TV cameras on their diving suits that will allow TDW trainers to monitor every phase of equipment operation.  Exact measurements are critical.  The cutter must penetrate the protective metal membrane without touching the pig guide bars located just below.  http://www.tdwilliamson.com/ LineMaster™ 2007 Schedule _______________________________________________________________________________ http://www.tdwilliamson.com/PDF/Newspdf/LineMasterTraining_Flyer.pdf T.D.
