TDW Brazil has recently completed its most important project to date. This was called
the Marlin Project and consisted of 29 double STOPPLE® plugs with by-pass on eight different platforms in Campos Basin offshore Brazil.
The Marlin Project started in 2005 when a customer had the need to install flow meters on eight platforms to comply with government rules. The first option was shutting down the platforms one by one in order to stop the flow on the gas lines and install the meters. The staged shutdown method was going to keep the customer from achieving their production goals for the year, so they began searching for a better option.
Since TDW had previously proposed STOPPLE plugging and bypass work on offshore platforms, the customer decided to give it a closer look. They started exploratory negotiations to learn more about how TDW technologies could allow the installation of meters with no shutdown. The fact-finding mission included a visit to Tulsa by a group of 8 people from the customer and several meetings in Brazil to put together a final scope of work which would include an additional contractor that would be working with us offshore.
The scope of work done by TDW included the supply of STOPPLE fittings and THREAD-O-RING™ fittings, qualification of welding procedures, verification of the engineering drawings by the contractor, in-line welding of the stopple fittings and all hot tapping and plugging operations.

The project started in February and ended October 2006. The lines that we worked were from 1” to 20” and from class 150 to class 1500.
For the execution of the job, TDW Brazil used 3 engineers, 6 technicians and 1 mechanic based in Brazil. The help of the Tulsa based engineering group was of most importance. They helped on the initial specification and gathering of equipment and also with special applications during the project. The support of TMP customer service was also very important, complying with all the necessary schedules and deliveries.
The job involved three separate visits to each platform. During the first visit, a group consisting of the customer, TDW and contractor personnel went aboard the platforms to gather all necessary information required to complete engineering drawings. The procedure included pipe analysis with ultrasound for wall thickness verifications and out-of-roundness verification which incorporated the use of laser scanning techniques. All preliminary detail gathering work was performed in 2005. With this information the engineering drawings were made which clearly defined each by-pass, meter placements and all related construction work.

Second visits to each platform were dedicated to welding STOPPLE fittings onto each line and NDT was performed. With phase two completed, a third trip to each platform was made to perform STOPPLE plugging and bypass operations and to install the required meters.
After completion of the Marlin Project, the customer was pleased with final outcome of all work performed and awarded TDW with a plaque in recognition of the quality of services performed. The entire project was accomplished within a very tight time period, a condition dictated by strict platform schedules.
The Marlin Project has been the most difficult contract TDW Brazil has performed to date. At best, offshore platform conditions are very complicated. Situated within a confined work environment, the space available for equipment repair or installation is almost non-existent. Effecting changes to critical offshore lines without disrupting production is a significant achievement.
TDW Brazil and the entire TDW global family are very proud of the job performed for the customer. The knowledge and experience gathered during the project was enormous.
Although the Marlin Project required the commitment of considerable skill and technical expertise, TDW Brazil, in conjunction with the broad resources and capabilities of TDW business units worldwide, is prepared to handle bigger and more difficult challenges.
